City! Wakayama Renovation (RTKL)

A dilapidated department store was renovated and re-branded as a medium-size shopping center. Without changing the locations of vertical circulation, the new scheme gave a maximum visibility so customers feel better oriented throughout the floor. The issue of low ceiling typical of an old retail structure was addressed by raising it wherever it could and making ceiling accent pieces around HVAC diffusers which could not be moved. A bold graphic articulation adorned the existing facade to give an entirely new face to the building. With a grocer specialty stores, F&B tenants and entertainment including a bowling alley, the place has become a new commercial center of the city. [project management of design team]
